![]() ![]() Remember some of those crazy dance’s: The Swim, The Twist, The Watusi, The Hully Gully, The Jerk, The Locomotion, The Fly…and the always popular basic Jitterbug. Without American Bandstand, I would never have been able to learn how to dance some of the newest or latest steps. It wasn’t long and every one was out on the dance floorĭick Clark was only 26 when he began hosting American Bandstand in 1956 I remember when the Twist by Chubby Checkers came out in 1959 and one couple had learned how to dance to it…We all watched them dance and tried to mimic their moves the best we could. Soon the cafeteria would be full of kids Rocking and Rolling all over the place. It would take a while but Finally someone (which was usually a girl) would break the ice and one brave couple would get the ball rolling. (It was always a miracle that we managed to find our own shoes later!) Everyone would be in their socks and their shoes would be over to the side somewhere. The cafeteria would be full of kids and the Juke Box was blaring out songs by Buddy Holly, Little Richard, The Ventures, Elvis and a whole list of all your favorite songs. When you entered the cafeteria, all the Tables and Chairs were pushed over to the sides of the room so that the entire area would be available to be used as the dance floor. “Are you going to go to the Hop Friday?” someone would ask, “Certainly, I wouldn’t miss it” would always be the response.įriday afternoon would finally arrive and everyone would cram all their books in their lockers and head for the cafeteria in droves. It would be quite the buzz throughout the week with everyone talking about it. They were being posted on the school walls, over the water fountains, on lockers…just about everywhere you looked. You would see signs beginning to show up everywhere. Yep…two young boys…” Dumb as Bricks…!” Standing there on one side of the cafeteria, with a room full of really pretty girls standing on the other side, just waiting for US to ask THEM to dance. ![]() “Well I’m not either.” I said with a small quiver in my voice. “I’m just not ready yet.” He shot back defensively. “Not Me.” I answered nervously, “Why don’t you?” Standing there like two wooden sticks, Jimmy reached over and poked me in the arm and said, “Why don’t you go over and ask her to dance?” ![]()
